Botanical Name Cymbopogon citratus
Description Lemon Grass is a tropical favorite in the Houston metro area, valued for both its culinary stalks and its ability to repel mosquitoes. It thrives in our intense summer sun and high humidity. While it enjoys consistent moisture, it is prone to root rot in poorly drained areas. In heavy clay soil, it is highly recommended to plant in raised beds or large containers. It grows rapidly during the summer but may require protection or mulching during rare hard freezes.
Exposure Full Sun (at least 6-8 hours)
Height x Width 3-5' Height x 2-3' Width
Water High; prefers consistently moist but not waterlogged soil
Zones 9 - 11 (Perennial in Houston; treat as annual or move indoors if below 30°F)
Fertilization Use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season
Pruning Cut back to 6" in late winter to remove brown foliage and encourage new growth
Deer Resistance High (Strong citrus scent deters animals)
