Botanical Name Callicarpa dichotoma 'Issai' (Purple Pride)
Description 'Purple Pride' is an improved cultivar of the Beautyberry, prized for its more compact, uniform habit and heavy fruit production. This 3-gallon (3G) size is a fast grower that adds unique texture to the Willis and Houston landscape. In summer, it produces inconspicuous pink flowers, but the real show begins in late summer when the branches become heavily laden with clusters of brilliant, metallic-purple berries. These berries persist into fall even after the foliage drops, creating a striking architectural look. It is a tough, adaptable shrub that thrives in our local humidity and is excellent for mass plantings or as a focal point in a woodland garden.
Exposure Full Sun to Partial Shade (Best berry production occurs in sunnier spots)
Height x Width 4-5' Height x 4-5' Width
Water Moderate; prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established but requires consistent watering during dry Texas spells to ensure a heavy berry crop.
Zones 5 - 8 (Reliable in Zone 9 with afternoon shade)
Fertilization Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges.
Pruning Prune back heavily in late winter or early spring (to about 12 inches) to encourage new, vigorous growth, as flowers and fruit appear on new wood.
Deer Resistance High
