Botanical Name Lagerstroemia 'Colorama Scarlet' PP31585
Description The 'Colorama™ Scarlet' is a premium selection for the Houston metro area, renowned for producing one of the truest red blooms available in the crape myrtle world. This 15-gallon specimen provides an immediate vertical statement for your home. The scarlet flowers emerge in large, heavy clusters that contrast beautifully against its dark, burgundy-tinged summer foliage. It is specifically bred for improved disease resistance and exceptional heat tolerance, standing up well to our humid Gulf Coast climate. While it is adaptable to our local clay, it performs best when the soil is amended with organic matter to ensure the drainage necessary for rapid establishment.
Exposure Full Sun (6+ hours daily is essential for deep red bloom color)
Height x Width 15' - 20' Height x 8' - 12' Width
Water Moderate; requires regular deep watering during its first year in the ground and throughout peak Houston summers to support its establishment.
Zones 7 - 10
Fertilization Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
Pruning Prune in late winter to remove cross-branches or seed pods. Avoid heavy "topping" to maintain the integrity of its natural upright form and sculptural bark.
Deer Resistance Medium
