  • Name: Philodendron ‘Split Leaf’ (Philodendron bipinnatifidum, also known as Thaumatophyllum selloum)
  • Average Landscape Size: 5–8 ft tall x 6–8 ft wide (commonly maintained size; can grow larger in ideal conditions)
  • Sun Requirements: Bright shade to part shade; protect from direct afternoon sun
  • Water Needs: Moderate; prefers rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil
  • Deer Resistance: Low to moderate
  • Fertilization & Pruning: Fertilize monthly during warm months with a balanced tropical plant food. Remove older leaves at the base as they yellow; minimal pruning otherwise. Protect from frost in winter.
  • Detailed Description:
The Split-Leaf Philodendron is a dramatic tropical foliage plant with enormous, glossy green leaves deeply cut into bold lobes. In our climate, it typically reaches 5–8 feet tall and wide, forming a lush, fountain-like mound. Left unpruned in frost-free regions, it can grow much larger, but in most landscapes it is maintained as a big accent plant. Thriving in bright filtered light or part shade, it adds instant tropical flair to shaded beds, poolside plantings, or large containers. Though frost-tender, it often recovers quickly from light cold damage in Gulf Coast gardens.
