Botanical Name Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem'
Description The Little Gem Magnolia is a versatile favorite for the Houston metro area, offering the classic elegance of a Southern Magnolia in a fraction of the space. This 15-gallon (15G) tree is highly prized for its small, leathery leaves with rusty-brown undersides and its prolific blooming habit. Unlike larger varieties, 'Little Gem' produces its large, lemon-scented white flowers while still quite young. It is exceptionally heat-tolerant, thrives in heavy clay soils, and its narrow, upright habit makes it ideal for privacy screens or focal points in smaller suburban yards.
Exposure Full Sun to Partial Shade
Height x Width 20-25' Height x 10-12' Width
Water Moderate; requires regular watering to establish its root system, but is quite resilient once mature. Ensure the planting site has decent drainage.
Zones 7 - 9
Fertilization Apply a balanced, slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring and mid-summer to support its long blooming cycle.
Pruning Minimal; naturally grows in a tidy, pyramidal shape. Pruning is best done in late winter or after the summer blooming cycle if shaping is desired.
Deer Resistance High
