Bougainvillea — Houston's Favorite Sun Lover

If you want maximum color with minimum fuss in the Houston area, bougainvillea is hard to beat. These showstopping plants thrive in our heat, love full sun, and reward neglect with an explosion of color that lasts for months.

Bougainvillea actually bloom better when slightly stressed — too much water and fertilizer produces lush green growth at the expense of flowers. In Houston's summer heat they are virtually unstoppable, producing brilliant color in shades of red, pink, purple, orange, and white.

The freeze question: Bougainvillea are root-hardy in the Houston area, meaning a hard freeze may kill the top of the plant but it will typically re-sprout from the roots in spring. In most Houston winters they come through with minimal damage. Container-grown plants can be moved to a protected area or garage during hard freezes.

Houston bougainvillea tip: Plant in the hottest, sunniest spot you have — against a south-facing wall or fence is ideal. Full sun and reflected heat brings out the absolute best performance. POtted bougainvillea seem to bloom better.
