Hibiscus is one of Houston's most beloved plants — and for good reason. Our hot, humid summers are exactly what tropical hibiscus was made for, producing dinner-plate sized blooms in an almost endless range of colors from summer straight through fall.
Tropical hibiscus delivers the classic bold colors and glossy leaves you see on porches and patios all over Houston. They bloom continuously in the heat but are frost sensitive — move container plants indoors when hard freezes threaten.
What about perennial hibiscus? If you're looking for hibiscus that comes back on its own every year without freeze protection, you want Hardy Hibiscus — also called Rose Mallow. Those varieties die back to the ground in winter but return reliably each spring with enormous blooms up to 12 inches across. Because they behave like perennials in our area, we carry them in our Perennials section where you'll find the full selection.
Houston hibiscus tip: Tropical hibiscus blooms best when slightly root-bound, so don't rush to move them into a larger pot. Feed regularly with a high-potassium fertilizer during the growing season to maximize bloom production.
