Tree, to 15' tall. Chill hours: 400–500. Ripens late July–August. Very large conical apple, yellow skin with red blush, crisp sweet-tart flesh. Stores up to 10 weeks. Cedar-apple rust resistant. Excellent pollinator. Requires a pollinator. Zones 5–9.

  • Named after Mollie Whatley, wife of a Rutgers student who loved the variety — nice human story for extended copy
  • Developed at New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, released 1966 — parentage is Golden Delicious × Edgewood × Red Gravenstein × Close
  • NOT related to Red Delicious — important to say in extended copy; customers often assume the name means it's similar
  • Cedar-apple rust resistance is a meaningful selling point for Texas — cedar trees (actually junipers) are everywhere in Texas and a major source of infection
  • Fire blight susceptible — worth noting in care tips; Houston's warm wet springs make this a real concern
  • Stores 10 weeks refrigerated — one of the better storage apples in a low-chill lineup
  • Explicitly recommended for Texas by multiple sources including Specialty Produce and Rutgers extension
  • Chill hours: sources range 400–500 (Bob Wells, Legg Creek) to 500–600 (Food Forest Nursery); going with 400–500 for Houston customer confidence — Houston Zone 9a averages 500–700 most years
  • Good Houston lineup sequencing: Anna (June–July) → Ein Shemer (mid-June–July) → Mollie's Delicious (late July–Aug) → Fuji (Sept–Oct) → Pink Lady (Oct–Nov) — five-variety staggered harvest
