A bushy evergreen shrub from South America. Gray-green leaves about 3 in. long with white woolly underside. 6 ft in height and 8 ft in spread. 1.5 in. across axillary single flowers with red petals and white reverse and long showy red stamens in mid-summer. Berries are ovoid and edible. Cultivar 'Variegata' has leaves margined creamy white.
